I made some Greek friends at the 5 mile beach I often think of them there was a girl called Maria that had a cottage beside the beach and she lived near the Hilton hotel in Nicosia. WORK IN CYPRUS

-- hope this is helpful for all of you out there hoping to get a job in Cyprus. - Firstly, it is VERY difficult for a non-Cypriot to get a work permit of any kind. Without one you will be working illegally and will probably be deported if caught. - Secondly, unless you have a skill that is in short supply in Cyprus you will have difficulty getting a job as the trade unions here are very strong and usually oppose the employment of foreign workers. - Finally, getting a work permit to do a job that could easily be filled by a Cypriot is almost impossible. So don't think about trying if you want to work in the Tourism trade, bars, restaurants, nightclubs etc.

The best thing to do is come here for a holiday. Look around. Test the water. Then decide. Many people have lost a fortune jumping in too quick and too deep. Remember Cyprus is not yet in the EU so there is no freedom of work movement yet for European Citizens. Things will change over the next few years, but until the take care.

Hello to all Cypriots and intending residents...

Originally from the UK, I have lived in Cyprus now for three years having met and subsequently married a Cypriot woman after coming here for a holiday in 1994. Like many other contributors to this forum, I enjoy my life in Cyprus, but beware ... not everything is as it seems! Living here is very different to spending a lovely two weeks break in the sun or looking back at 'the old place' from exile abroad! There are probably many aspects of your present life which you take for granted, but which may come in to sharp focus on living here.

I can safely say that, were it not for being with my wife, I would on balance not choose Cyprus as a place to live. This has nothing to do with the continuing problem of the Turkish occupation of the north, but to do with some of the attitudes that pervade the society as a whole.

Be prepared for such things as a corrupt and painstakingly slow bureaucratic system (a throwback to the British colonial days and colonial attitudes); incredibly dangerous, selfish and arrogant driving habits (the island, to its disgrace, has one of the worst road deaths per head of population in Europe); shops which are forced to close on Saturday afternoons leaving only Saturday morning for working people to do all their shopping (restricted shopping hours are slowly changing thanks to the efforts of a few major shop owners); absolutely diabolically bad television with the medium used primarily for second-rate entertainments only (there are a few better dramas and documentaries appearing, mainly late at night, but the lack of professional presentation and shabby treatment of viewers is something that only Cypriots, with their reluctance to really complain about things, would put up with); an outmoded and often propagandist education system which does little to serve those of less than average intelligence and restricts the freedom and outlook of the most talented and intelligent; arrogant and, when they get the chance, intrusive church leaders (you'll be hard pressed to find a 'friendly tolerant vicar' type here, more likely a bellicose, Hellenistic bigot who believes there is 'no other way' (not to mention the recent church scandals); a government which is composed almost entirely of old men, many of whom dream of past glories from EOKA days in the fifties, who do not have the dignity to resign when making political errors and mis-judgements; and a narrow and and dismissive prevailing attitude to minorities such as homosexuals, people who are dark-skinned and pets.

I could go on, but I think there is enough food for thought there before making the decision to live here. I would like to add that, despite the above list, I am happy and love my life here, but that is mainly because of the people in my immediate circle at home and work and because I am mature and well-qualified and experienced professionally.

I am always critical, I think it is healthy. I am not comparing Cyprus with the UK. Some things are better there, some are worse. But, before you submit to the lure of a safe place to bring up your children (which Cyprus undoubtedly is, notwithstanding the ever present threat of war), remember also that your children will be subject to many societal influences which you may not see in advance.

I submit this as the honest appraisal of an outsider who defends Cyprus to the hilt when abroad, but who is frustrated when constructively critical comment at home is rubbished rather than responded to positively.

To all those of you with a romantic image of the island, either as regular tourists or as Cypriots living abroad .. be careful!

Hi there I am a Phd Student at Edinburgh University, and I'm going over to Cyprus with My family - partner and two daughters aged 8 and 10 in August/September. I am looking for an apartment for us all - in or within a 10 mile radius of Paphos, which isn't too expensive.( please see ' Accomm. The holier than thou attitude of those in authority is exasperated when one learns that their authority comes mainly from nepotism and corruption and not in anyway from ability. The escapades of the disgraced (eventually) Bishop of Limassol and Interior Minister and their refusal to stand down regardless of the evidence proving their immoral actions, is a true reflection of a morally corrupt society. If it were not for the genuine friendliness of the average Cypriot towards strangers, the island would not be worth two hoots. My business activities brought me to Cyprus in 1996. When my contract finally terminates in 2000, I will leave the island gladly. My only regret being that those ordinary people I leave behind have to put up with this abuse from those with power.

EUROVISION ...INSIGHTS TO CYPRIOT ATTITUDES

I thought I'd heard it all ...but no! Following the recent disappointment of Cyprus' Eurovision Song Contest entry getting only 2 points (from the UK), there has followed a tirade of ridiculous comment in 'explanation' of why. A lot of the comment has been along the lines of 'Western conspiracy against Cyprus' ...with some people seriously holding the view that the song did badly because of the strong anti-NATO (pro-Serbian ethnic cleansing??) attitude of many islanders over these last few months.

Such comments only serve to bolster those who hold the view that Cypriots are hysterical in their analysis of the World at large.

I know that I am in danger of doing what many Cypriots do (that is, take the Eurovision Song Contest seriously!!) ...but such attitudes do not help Cypriot people to be taken seriously over the truly more serious issues.

I feel really sorry for all involved with the Cypriot song entry...they were very unlucky....but do Cypriots know the ignominity of being bad losers? ...or the respect that can be gained by shaking off, dusting down and coming up smiling?

Hello, I wish to move to Cyprus with my wife and 4 kids. I read that as an alien I could only buy 400m of land. True? Is that close to an acre? Here in the states we have a 50'x50' garden for vegetables which we would like to have in Cyprus. We would like to learn Greek and send our children to school. Hello,I am from the United States of America, currently living near Annapolis, Maryland. I will retire from the federal government in four years and am considering Cyprus as a retirement home. My wife and I are both avid sailors and have a 40 foot ketch we would bring with us.

I would appreciate information on rules and regulations for obtaining long term resident alien status. It would be helpful to know the cost of living, vis-a-vis the U.S. (in U.S. $ if possible) Such things as rent, dockage for our boat and availability of health care are also of interest to us.

i am a norwegian girl on 27 years, who is moving to Cyprus next year. My boyfriend, our son 2 year, and my self will be living in Larnaca for 2 years. If we like it, we stay longer. I have been in cyprus many times, but i guess it will be a big diffrents to not go like a tourist.
