Hi, my name is Chris Neophytou. I would like to introduce
myself and my disability to you. I have traveled to many different
countries in Europe, Africa and Asia and I know the exact feeling and
questions that go through your mind when planning your holiday to an
unknown destination. I am 40 years old and have
had a genetic disorder called Freidriechs Ataxia. I have been wheelchair
bound for the last 12 years. The apartments
are managed and owned by my parents. Before getting married and moving to
another town, I lived at the apartments so my knowledge of them
and the
surroundings is excellent. As we know, there are many
different types of disabilities. In my case even though I cannot walk, I
am fortunate that I still have strength in my lower limbs. Therefore my
abilities and disabilities are different to others. The upstairs apartment is
situated on the upper floor. It is accessible by elevator, which was
installed for me. The measurements of the lift door are 80 cm wide.
Lengthwise is no problem because I fit into the lift and somebody can
still stand behind me. The apartment is all one
level (that is, no split-level with stairs or ramps in the apartment) The
doors are all wide (85 cm). I have a size 43 cm seat width and I manoeuvre
around the apartment, in and out of the rooms without the thought that I
am to close to the frame of the door and that I may scratch the doors.
Unfortunately the kitchen counters and sink are solid pieces so you have
to use them sitting sideways. The dining table has legroom so that you can
sit comfortably when eating. There are handles placed
conveniently around the bathroom so that one can use the toilet and
transfer in and out of the bath, BUT you cannot fit your chair parallel to
the bath. There
is also another bathroom with a roll in roll in shower. There is access to all
areas of the apartments. There are ramps to the pool area, to the road
etc.... The only stairs are to get to the upper level but there is a lift
like I mentioned before. As far as the pool is concerned, a pool hoist is available so if you feel like cooling off, the hoist lowers you into the pool and elevates you out later. We are small family run tourist apartments so unfortunately we do not have a Jacuzzi. The pool has rails all around and there are also raised sun beds. Getting to the Village
Square is a 2-min walk and to the beach about 15-min walk. These routes
are wheelchair friendly. All the studio apartments are completely wheelchair friendly. Studio 2 has a large
bathroom area so if you use a hoist or have a carer helping you, space is
definitely no problem. However studio 2 is garden facing unlike studio 8
which is pool facing.
